“Contrast is what makes photography interesting.”

The most successful images here are those were the contrast is high. This is key to ensuring that the images are attractive to the viewer.  The low tone images where there are almost no highlights or shadows are very soft in appearance and the the tones are very similar to each other. Visually this is not so appealing as the images with high tone ranges.
